19 Apr God Pursues Us!
Read Jonah 1:7-17
Thought for the Day: God pursues us!
Jonah decided that it was time to run away. Faced with a daunting task (go to the capital city of the most violent civilization and tell them to stop being evil), Jonah looked for a way out. He found his exit when he boarded a boat headed for Spain. But, the story didn’t end there. God wasn’t going to let Jonah off the hook so easily. Despite his fear, Jonah had been given a unique calling. He had been asked to do something amazing. God didn’t ask someone else because He called Jonah. And, like each of us – Jonah was worth pursuing.
God found a way to get Jonah’s attention. He sent a storm that disrupted the sea and scared the living daylights out of Jonah (not to mention the other sailors). This storm was so aggressive that the men on the ship realized it was supernatural in origin. When it became clear that the storm was a result of Jonah’s disobedience, there was nowhere left for him to run. To stop the storm, Jonah asked to be thrown into the sea. The sailors resisted until they realized that they had no other options. They threw Jonah overboard, the storm stopped, and God provided a giant fish to swallow Jonah.
Like Jonah, we find times in our lives when we run from God. At those times we may forget that we are worth pursuing. When we make decisions out of fear, we are forgetting that God sees us as valuable. We are not simply interchangeable cogs in a great wheel. Instead, each of us has our own unique worth and value. Never forget that if you or I were the only person to have sinned that God would still have sent Christ to die on the Cross personally. Like Jonah, let’s remember that when there’s nowhere left to run, it’s time to face the truth: God loves us more than we can even imagine. To God, we are always worth pursuing!
In Christ,
