31 Jan An Everlasting Love
Read Jeremiah 31:1-6
Thought for the Day: God’s love lasts forever!
In the Ancient World, pretty much everything that looked permanent was shockingly temporary. A king would rise to power out of nowhere only to be quickly deposed and replaced. Seemingly unstoppable empires like the Hittites, Assyrians, or Babylonians were in the end quite stoppable. The greatest walls would crumble and the strongest armies were all eventually defeated.
Ancient Israel was only a united kingdom under Kings Saul, David, and Solomon. Soon after, family quarrels, infighting, and territorial disputes caused the kingdom to divide in half. Even when it was united, it had to deal with a series of civil wars which threatened any sense of stability the people might have held.
It was in this context that the prophet Jeremiah was called. For generations, the Jewish people had chosen to live idol-to-idol rather than faithfully under God. Facing the fall of an already divided kingdom, Jeremiah warned the people of the cost of their disobedience. Still, no one listened. That’s when Jeremiah gave a simple reminder: only God and His love last forever. God loves with an “everlasting love”. Despite their clinging to temporary things, Jeremiah reminded them of God’s faithfulness:
“I have loved you with an everlasting love;
therefore I have continued My faithfulness to you.” Jeremiah 31:3
How often do we make the mistake of believing temporary things are permanent? With the right perspective, we remember that God’s love is an everlasting love. Even when situations and circumstances let us down, God won’t. God simply asks us to trust Him.
In Christ,
Pastors Stan and David
