Thought for the Day: God wants us to ask for help!
Consider the greatest heroes from film, literature, or even TV. While heroes come in all shapes and sizes, the truly great ones all have one thing in common: a willingness to ask for help and rely on a supportive team. In Star Wars, Luke Skywalker had Leia, Han, Lando, and Chewbacca. In The Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen had Peeta, Gale, and Haymitch. In Black Panther, T’Challa had Nakia, W’Kabi, and Shuri. The heroes could only succeed because they were saved from failure countless times by those around them.
In the Book of Ecclesiastes, the Preacher takes a moment to demonstrate the difference having a team makes. Unfortunately, it is easy to mistakenly believe we need to take problems on by ourselves. When we do this and things don’t work out, we fail alone. But, as we are reminded in Ecclesiastes, there is great power in working together: “If they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up.” Put simply, if I am vulnerable alone, together we are stronger!
Let’s be honest – it is no secret that we have the best chance of success (when doing pretty much anything) if we are willing to work with others. But even knowing this, how often do we still find ourselves stubbornly trying to go it alone? At the times we fail alone, let’s remember the wisdom of Ecclesiastes. Since we are strongest when we work with the Christians God has placed in our lives, it is more than OK to ask for help. In fact, asking for help is a great way to live humbly. And remember, even the heroes in movies would fail without their teams.
Here’s the bottom line: God wants us to ask for help. Together, we are stronger!
In Christ,
