Build My Life (LOOK IN THE MIRROR Day Four)

Build My Life (LOOK IN THE MIRROR Day Four)

Read Matthew 7:24-27
Thought for the Day: I will build my life on Jesus’ teaching!

Last night, when my daughter and I made a tower out of blocks together, I had an idea. Rather than simply building it on the ground, we stacked two pillows and then began our construction on top. Within a few minutes, our tour was quite high (especially in the eyes of a toddler) and Ruby said, “Wow!” Our excitement lasted until I stood up, the shift caused the pillows to move, and our once-impressive tower fell apart. Suddenly, we were back where we started: a father and child without a block tower.

In Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus is quite clear: Christians are not instructed to build our lives on flimsy things like pillows. Neither are we told to build our lives on earthly things like approval, popularity, or wealth. After all, these things of the world are fickle and fail. Instead, “Everyone then who hears these words of Mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.” While heaven and earth will pass away, Jesus’ words will always remain!

When we look in the mirror, what do we see? Are we following Jesus’ teaching, loving God, loving our neighbors, and serving others? Or, are we making choices out of a desire to impress someone other than God? If we find ourselves building our lives on pillows, let’s turn to God and ask Him to give us the courage to instead build our lives upon the Rock!

In Christ,
Pastor David (and Stan)
