The Berean Test

The Berean Test

Read Acts 17:10-15

Thought for the Day: The Bible is my ultimate written authority!

It is quite fun to see some of the variations different families add when they sit down for a game of Monopoly. It is very likely that no two families play this classic game quite the same way because of a simple concept: “house rules”. Not content to simply read through the written rules, it can be more fun to add little wrinkles here and there. After all, Monopoly is only a game. What harm is there in ditching the rules for a little improvising?

If we are not careful, our spiritual lives can look a little too much like games of Monopoly played with “house rules”. In the days of the Early Church, some groups played fast and loose with Scripture, bringing in their own traditions and ideas. But, this was not the case with the Bereans! When the Apostle Paul arrived preaching the Gospel, they did not blindly follow. Instead, “they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so. Many of them therefore believed.”

How much better off would we be if we lived like the Bereans? Rather than making things up as we go or following today’s most popular fads, let’s open the Bible and see what it has to say as we face each day. When we start to GO and trust God, we see that all of our house rules aren’t helpful. We have been given something far better than any list of Monopoly rules. We have God’s Word!

In Christ,
