Never Lose Sight

Thought for the Day: My focus for today is following Jesus!

Thinking back, it is easy to remember several TV shows which used a “monster of the week” format. From Power Rangers to the X Files to Buffy the Vampire Slayer (and even including 1960s Batman reruns on TV Land), this concept was pretty common. While these shows had main villains (“Big Bads”), older series tended to have many more episodes than those today. Because it would have been redundant to have only one villain appear constantly, a single-episode “monster of the week” often was introduced and defeated in a given hour. It was up to the hero to defeat this minor villain without losing sight of what really mattered (stopping the Big Bad at the end of the season). When heroes became short-sighted, they ran into major problems!

The Christians in Galatia dealt with a very similar situation. While they didn’t deal with monsters, they did not always have the right focus. As a group of believers, it was their job to never lose sight of what matters. The Apostle Paul emphasized this by writing, “I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel – not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ.”

Rather than continuing to follow Jesus daily, it is easy to lose focus. While we know Jesus has asked us to allow Him to be the Lord of our lives, we can quickly turn to other things instead. How often do we let politics, careers, popularity, etc take Jesus’ rightful place as most important in our lives? Let’s learn the lesson of both the Galatian church and 90s television: there is only one correct focus for our lives!

In Christ,
Pastors Stan and David
