Thought for the Day:God is my “safe spot”!
Throughout human history, there has been a general understanding that groups need a “safe spot” to go to in times of trouble. In feudal times, lords would fortify their residences and call them castles. When the Pilgrims came over in 1620, a military-style fort was established at the top of Plymouth Colony. During the Cold War, underground bunkers were created in case of a nuclear emergency. Unfortunately, castles, forts, and bunkers all share a flaw: they are destructible human creations. Castles can be knocked down. Forts can be burned. Bunkers can be infiltrated. None of these can be a true “safe spot” forever.
In Psalm 59, David the Psalmist wrote about his desire to find peace and deliverance from his enemies. However, instead of placing his trust in physical fortifications, David knew that only God is able to provide real refuge. Throughout the ups-and-downs of his life, David knew that God would never let him down:
In our times of trouble, where do we turn? How do we seek to find peace? Just as David learned, human constructs will ultimately let us down. Even the strongest castle will eventually crumble. In our moments of greatest need, do we turn to earthly things or God? While everyone and everything else will let us down, He never will. Today, let’s realize that God is our fortress, the One who shows us unconditional love, and our only true “safe spot”!
