“The Lesson of King David”

“The Lesson of King David”

Read 2 Samuel 12:1-13

Thought for the Day: God is my first love!

The boy who became King David loved his sheep and wrote the 23rd Psalm. He played the harp for his troubled king and defeated Goliath with a smooth stone. Early in his life, David’s first love was God. He lived life as “a man after God’s own heart”. Going through difficult and divisive times, David trusted the plan God had for him. As a young boy, David trusted God to keep him safe from lions in the field. Years later, he was kept safe from the anger of King Saul and was ultimately given the opportunity to serve his people as their king.

Gradually, things begin to get in the way of David’s love for God. David began to mistakenly overvalue his works and deeds. Pride and ego led him to start compromising. Ultimately, he had an affair with a married woman, ordered her husband killed, and took her into his household. David had forgotten the love he had for God at first. Instead, he let other things get in the way. But just when it seemed like David would successfully use his power and influence to get away with everything, the prophet Nathan showed up on his doorstep. While David tried acting like everything was fine, it wasn’t. He was a mess and needed to repent. Rather than continuing to let his pride and ego get in the way of his first love for God, David repented. He accepted the consequences of his actions and the forgiveness God offered.

We don’t need to mess up as badly as King David in order to go to God and repent. We experience moments where we realize we have abandoned our first love and let everything else get in the way. Rather than continuing to let pride and ego get in the way, let’s acknowledge a simple truth: each of us sins and falls short but God wants us to repent and turn back to Him. Let’s learn the lesson of King David and return to our first love: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart!”

In Christ,
