“In The Name Of…”
Read Colossians 3:16-17
Thought for the Day: I represent Jesus to others with my words and actions.
Throughout my life, I have encountered the phrase: “in the name of…” As a child, I read stories set in the Middle Ages where characters would declare, “stop in the name of the king!” When I first stumbled upon the music of U2 as a middle schooler, I listened to the song “Pride (In the Name of Love)”. Playing Banquo in Macbeth in a high school play, I used the line, “in the name of truth…” My pastor in college introduced me to one of his favorite movies, In The Name of the Father. These experiences and many more got me thinking – in what or whose name do I live my life? Who do I represent?
Thousands of years prior, the Apostle Paul considered the very same questions. While it is easy to lose focus and represent the wrong things if we are not careful, Christians have the chance to live for Jesus as we are His representatives on earth. Therefore, we are reminded, “Whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.”
While we can easily forget it, we don’t simply represent ourselves. For some of the people in our lives, we may be the only Bible they ever read. By looking at our lives (both our actions and words), they will make a determination about whether Jesus is someone worth following. Today, let’s remember that we don’t come in the name of a king or parent. We live in the name of Jesus!
In Christ,
Pastors David (and Stan)
