A Young Dad’s Perspective

A Young Dad’s Perspective

Thought for the Day: When I am weak, then I am strong!
I am the parent of two young children. I know that no matter what I do, it will never be “enough”. Parenting is nothing like accruing sky miles. No matter how many great “dad moments” I am able to experience with my children (i.e. Saturday morning 6am pancake breakfasts while Mom sleeps), I am not able to cash in these good deeds for a big reward later. No matter what, there will come a time when my children won’t think I’m the best, coolest, or most important. No matter how steady I try to be, my children will experience times when they feel I have let them down. And – they will experience times when they are right.
Fortunately, I (and my household) follow Jesus. While I will never be a perfect parent, I have been given an incredible gift: God chose me (not anyone else) to be Ruby and Henry’s Dad! Like the Apostle Paul, I know that when I am weak (as a human), I am able to be strong in Jesus. Some day, Ruby will have her driver’s license, and I will be terrified. At that moment, my job will NOT be to stop her from driving but to go into my house and pray for her. In the days, weeks, months, and years leading up to that moment, I am choosing to model how to trust Jesus instead of pretending I can be perfect.
Living through these divided times, it is my hope that each of us can learn to see that when we are weak (as humans) that we can be strong (through Jesus). When feelings of inadequacy leave us wondering if we have done enough, let’s remember that all we need to do is follow Jesus, NOT to be perfect!
In Christ,
Pastor David
