Why Church?

Why Church?

Genesis 17:7

I will establish my covenant between me and you and your offspring after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your offspring after you.

Over 4,000 years ago, Abraham and Sarah learned that God’s family goes from generation to generation. They discovered that God would bless them and all who lived by faith. This blessing would include being part of a spiritual family for them, the next generation, the generation following that one, and all future generations! That was an amazing promise!

Today, through the church is how God continues to fulfill this promise. God has set up His family in such a way that we are enriched by those who are older than us as well as those who are younger.

When our boys were little, we learned this lesson through a relationship that was developed in our last church. Our congregations had a church grandparents’ program in which our boys were assigned John and Evelyn Reed as their church grandparents. This relationship was one of the most important relationships that Todd and David developed in their childhood. Living far from their grandparents in Ohio, and having their other grandparents in poor health, David and Todd were literally blessed by the way that God gave them a special “multi-generational church family”!

This week consider the way in which God has blessed you through your church. Think of at least one person who is older or younger than you. Take time to pray for them and reach out to them to tell them how important they are to you. Consider how fortunate you are to have the friendships that God has blessed you with through your church!

Take time to listen to Zach Williams, “Old Church Choir”. I dare you to listen to it without smiling!!!!
